Nexon’s hot-temperature RPG Blue Archive was subjected to an unconventional hacker attack on 31 August, resulting in the temporary maintenance of the server. Nexon subsequently confirmed that there was no threat to player data and financial information and that compensation was awarded to the community.
On 31 August, the UBP global server was briefly invaded, with numerous anomalies. The player community suddenly discovered that the game’s banner was a 3D model, that the coffee shop scene was occupied by a large number of future role maps for Kurosaki and the first sound, and that the information page even had an unusual version of Kusaki’s iconic laughter.
Following the rapid fermentation of social media, Necon immediately carried out emergency maintenance. After a few hours of repairing the servers and restoring normality, the player community described the incident as a “light snowing”. As at 1 September, the results of the investigation into the incident had been released by Necon.
By that time in the bulletin, Necon had originated from the tampering of client settings in the content delivery network and was redirected to “45.94.31.77 (Netherlands IP address), but stressed that the incident was “more dramatic than destructive”. It is clear that “player accounts, game data and payment information are not affected”.
To prevent similar incidents, Necon has strengthened security agreements and restricted authorized access. The company is working with the Korea Internet Security Agency and is committed to implementing “more stringent security measures, such as penetration testing and the leakage reward scheme”.
In an apology, a special compensation package (up to 8 September) was also issued, comprising 10 recruitment vouchers, 500 points of physical strength, 150 tactical challenges, 7 course vouchers, 300,000 credit points, etc. The rapid resolution of the incident won a positive assessment from the player community.
